Review of Forest Pest Management
Course Description
Protect yourself and the environment as you apply pesticides with the help of specialized tools and techniques designed for work in forest environments. This course is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and offers two credit hours of forest pest management instruction.
Master the tools of the trade for forest pest management. Nozzles and sprayers receive special attention, including calibration for new and existing components. Take a detailed look at broadcast sprayers, banding calibration and application methods. You will also learn how to minimize unintended chemical exposure by preventing pesticide drift and achieving a uniform application.
Correct tool use is only part of safe and successful forest management. Learn the duties of Pennsylvania pest managers and their employers under Worker Protection Standards (WPS). Know what PPE your employer must make available and how they keep you safe. Discover standards for disclosing and posting information about the pesticides present in your workplace.
Working outside exposes pest managers to the dangers of the elements, including excessive heat. Recognize and avoid the dangers of heat stress and other heat-related illnesses.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss Worker Protection Standards, including the responsibilities of employers and employees who routinely work with pesticides.
- Identify the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and effectively manage the dangers of heat stress.
- Identify key variables in the calibration of pesticide application equipment.
- State the equipment and methods for forest pesticide application.
- Explain calibration methods and techniques.
- Describe methods for pesticide drift prevention.
Respiratory Protection
Course Description
Respirators protect workers against insufficient oxygen environments, harmful dusts, fogs, smokes, mists, gases, vapors, and sprays. These hazards may cause cancer, lung impairment, diseases, or death. Some pesticide labels require the use of a respirator as part of the personal protective equipment. This course outlines the types of respirators available, proper fit, and inspection/maintenance requirements.
After completing this course participants will be able to:
- Discuss the different types of respirators and when to use each type
- Describe the steps of a successful fit test
- Outline the necessary care and maintenance required for each type of respirator
