Pesticide Emergency Management and Environmental Protection | Oregon Approval #66896
Instructor: Sarah Racine
This one-credit course is approved by the Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticides Program to teach the essentials of safe and legal pesticide application. Careful pesticide use protects people and the environment against possible emergencies and toxic chemical exposure.
When using pesticides, developing a comprehensive management plan is important. Tools like notifications and warning signs safeguard the public. It may even be possible to avoid pesticide use in favor of safer pest management tools.
Plan for safety from start to finish. Stop emergencies before they happen with proper chemical selection, application techniques, equipment use, cleanup, disposal, recordkeeping and liability planning. Only store chemicals in secure service containers, including during mixing and transportation.
Learn how to provide simple treatments for exposure to skin, clothing, eyes and the respiratory system. You may have to provide first aid in case of leaks, spills or misapplications. In case of an emergency or environmental contamination, know how to respond safely and quickly.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify pesticide safety measures to protect people and the environment from pesticide exposure.
- Explain how to handle pesticide emergencies such as leaks, spills and misapplications.
- Describe appropriate ways to handle and apply pesticides.
- Discuss effective equipment selection, safe application techniques and proper practices for cleanup and disposal.
- Recognize different types of pesticide emergencies and corresponding first aid measures.
