Pesticide Emergency Management and Environmental Protection | New York Approval #NY-24-426636
Instructor: Sarah Racine
Safe use of pesticides begins long before the sprayers come out and ends long after application is over. This one-credit course, approved by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, instructs pest managers in techniques to avoid emergencies and protect the environment.
Always start pesticide use with a complete management plan. Know the dangers of pesticides and plan to minimize unnecessary exposure. Investigate the use of pesticide alternatives. Know what to do when spills, leaks and misapplications threaten people and the environment. Post notifications and warning signs well before work begins.
This course delves into safe pesticide use from beginning to end. Plan your chemical selection carefully. Store pesticides safely for transportation and mixing in service containers. Apply what you know about hazardous pesticides in your equipment use, application techniques, cleanup measures and disposal process.
In case of an emergency, this course will prepare you to respond effectively. As you correct misapplications and contain spills, be prepared to provide first aid. Learn how to treat exposure to skin, eyes, clothing and even the respiratory system.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
– Identify pesticide safety measures to protect people and the environment from pesticide exposure.
– Recognize different types of pesticide emergencies and corresponding first aid measures.
– Discuss effective equipment selection, safe application techniques and proper practices for cleanup and disposal.
– Explain how to handle pesticide emergencies such as leaks, spills and misapplications.
– Describe appropriate ways to handle and apply pesticides.
