Pesticide Emergency Management and Environmental Protection | Nevada Approval #NV-23-209
Instructor: Sarah Racine
Safe pesticide use protects people and the environment from dangerous hazards. This one-credit course, approved by the Nevada Department of Agriculture, explores emergency management and hazard mitigation.
Non-toxic alternatives to chemical pesticides minimize environmental danger. This course teaches how to avoid unnecessary pesticide use. When necessary, plan pesticide use carefully from start to finish. Start early with a management plan, advance notifications and publicly visible signs.
Safe planning doesn’t end there. Service containers allow for the safe storage, mixing and transportation of pesticides. Careful planning in chemical selection, equipment use, application techniques, cleanup, disposal, recordkeeping and liability are all part of a complete management plan.
In an emergency, proper action can minimize damage to people and the environment. Leaks, spills and misapplications require different responses. The course includes first aid measures for human exposure, ranging from skin contact to respiratory irritation.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify pesticide safety measures to protect people and the environment from pesticide exposure.
- Recognize different types of pesticide emergencies and corresponding first aid measures.
- Describe appropriate ways to handle and apply pesticides.
- Discuss effective equipment selection, safe application techniques and proper practices for cleanup and disposal.
- Explain how to handle pesticide emergencies such as leaks, spills and misapplications.
