Pesticide Emergency Management and Environmental Protection | North Carolina DACS Approved
Instructor: Sarah Racine
Safe pesticide use protects the environment and the people in it. This one-credit course is approved by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to teach safe, legal pesticide use and emergency management principles.
Start with a management plan. Know your pesticides and the dangers they pose to people and the environment. Post public warnings and notifications. When possible, avoid pesticides entirely in favor of effective alternatives.
Apply that same caution to the rest of your process. Take the time to assess chemical selection, equipment use, application techniques, cleanup, disposal, recordkeeping and liability concerns. Mix, transport and store chemicals in approved service containers. Stop emergencies before they happen.
In case of an emergency, be ready to respond effectively. Leaks, spills and misapplications lead to hazardous exposure and may require first aid. Learn how to provide simple treatments for exposure to skin, clothing, eyes and the respiratory system.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
– Identify pesticide safety measures to protect people and the environment from pesticide exposure.
– Recognize different types of pesticide emergencies and corresponding first aid measures.
– Explain how to handle pesticide emergencies such as leaks, spills and misapplications.
– Describe appropriate ways to handle and apply pesticides.
– Discuss effective equipment selection, safe application techniques and proper practices for cleanup and disposal.
