This course bundle will fulfill the category recertification for Michigan Commercial Applicators holding a General Pest Management (Category 7A) certification. This course bundle must be paired with the Michigan Commercial Core 8 Credit Bundle to complete recertification requirements as this course bundle does NOT contain any commercial core training. Topics include structure invading pests, structure infesting pests, and an overview of bed bug management.

Course Description

As certified or licensed applicators it is so important that you can trust everyone on your team to be knowledgeable about their duties, and responsible for protecting your customers, the environment, and your business. A solid basic training program for all technicians will help you work safer and more efficiently.

Common Pests of Residential, Industrial & Institutional Structures
Course Description
This course, which is approved by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, teaches pest managers how to identify interior and exterior pests found in institutional, residential, and industrial buildings. Pests discussed include insects, rats, mice, weeds, bats, fungi, and certain birds. The course also provides various management methods for interior and exterior pests.
Pests that infest structures can negatively impact wood foundations, damage fabrics, infest stored food, and infect people. To prevent potential human injury or property damage, pest managers must know how to properly and safely control these pests.
After completing this course, pest managers in Michigan will be able to:
- Describe wood-destroying pest damage and explain the importance of treating wood prior to use
- Identify common vertebrate and invertebrate pests and outline effective management strategies
- Identify and manage common fabric pests Identify common stored-food pests and how to avoid them
- Identify common parasitic, biting, and stinging pests and know how to manage them
IPM Practices for Landscape Pest Management
Course Description
The Effective Pesticide Applications in Landscape and Turf Settings course focuses on the advantages and factors to consider when creating an integrated pest management (IPM) program for Michigan pesticide applicators.
The course includes a range of pest management techniques, including augmentation, mechanical and cultural control, sanitation, and pesticide use. Michigan students also learn about liquid pesticide application equipment and calibration, as well as techniques for applying baits/traps, granule pesticides, and tree injection and implantation.
Additionally, students gain information on maintaining pesticide application equipment and determining the amount of pesticide needed based on pesticide type and area size.
After taking this course, Michigan pesticide applicators will be able to:
- Understand the different pest management approaches that comprise an IPM.
- Be able to explain how to utilize granule pesticides, tree injection and implantation, and baits/traps.
- Know the types of pesticide application equipment used in landscape, turf, and interiorscape settings.
- Determine how to maintain and calibrate pesticide application equipment.
Bed Bug Health Effects & Control
Course Description
Bed bugs are a common and difficult household pest that can be linked to a number of health effects such as psychological issues, cutaneous reactions, allergic reactions, anemia, and potential disease transmission. This course outlines various management methods for bed bug control and treatment as well as common symptoms and signs of health effects caused by the presence of bed bugs. Taught by Mississippi State University’s Jerome Goddard Ph.D., Extension Professor of Medical Entomology, this course presents numerous case studies of real world scenarios that express the complexities of bed bug infestations.
