Pesticide Emergency Management and Environmental Protection

Protect people and the environment from dangerous hazards through safe pesticide use. Approved by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, this one-credit course teaches the essentials of safe, legal pesticide application.

It’s recommended to avoid pesticides in favor of alternatives when possible. But when pesticides are needed, pest managers should always practice safe handling. Notifications, management plans and warning signs are important tools that help safeguard the public.

There’s no substitute for safe planning. Service containers allow for the safe storage, mixing and transportation of pesticides. Careful equipment usage, chemical selection, cleanup, disposal and recordkeeping all help minimize hazards.

In the case of an application emergency, this course prepares you to respond by explaining first aid measures for skin, clothing, eye and respiratory exposure. Spills, leaks, and misapplications are all reviewed in detail.

Respiratory Protection

Respirators protect workers against insufficient oxygen environments, harmful dusts, fogs, smokes, mists, gases, vapors, and sprays. These hazards may cause cancer, lung impairment, diseases, or death. Some pesticide labels require the use of a respirator as part of the personal protective equipment. This chapter outlines the types of respirators available, proper fit, and inspection/maintenance requirements.
